The Company
Air Quality Solutions' mission is to enhance the effectiveness of indoor air quality management through the application of plants and benign microbes that Nature routinely uses to cleanse herself. Our Naturaire® Systems are developed to produce the highest indoor air quality through the application of the most effective indoor air biofiltration designed to embody the careful combination of plants and benign microbes that are proven to imitate Nature in given environments. We analyze the most common pollutants in every location before designing the biology communities for our Naturaire® Systems.

Culture at Air Quality Solutions Ltd. will be based on three principal commitments:

  • Commitment to enhancing the quality of the air that we breathe through the effective use of our technologies

  • Commitment to the social and economic well-being of our customers, suppliers and our employees and their families

  • Commitment to enhancing the integrity of business practices
These commitments define the values that drive behaviour in the company and expectations of our employees and management.

Brief History
The seed of Air Quality Solutions dates back to the Canada Life Environmental Room Project started in 1994. In this research project, a meeting room in the head office of Canada Life Assurance (Toronto, ON) was fitted with an early version of an indoor air biofilter. This was part of the research at the Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility at the University of Guelph investigating the use of plants in closed environments such as space vehicles (e.g., the International Space Station) applications and buildings here on Earth. The research at the Canada Life Environmental Room was originally funded by Canada Life and its subsidiary Adason Properties, CRESTech (The Centre for Research in Earth & Space Technologies) and the University of Guelph. CRESTech is one of four Ontario Centres of Excellence established to enhance Ontario's research, development and competitiveness through co-operative initiatives involving Ontario industries, universities and research institutions.

The principal research on the biofilter technology was conducted by Dr. Alan Darlington and a team of researchers from the University of Guelph at the Canada Life Environmental Room, NORCAT (the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology, Sudbury, ON) and the University of Guelph.

A 2001 Fellowship, Martin Walmsley Fellowship, received by Dr. Darlington, had as a condition the commercialization of the biofilter technology. This fellowship provided the seed funds for Dr. Darlington and collaborating researchers to form Air Quality Solutions Ltd, a technology company that develops and markets the Naturaire® System. A very active research group continues to investigate the biofiltration of indoor air and other occupied spaces at the University of Guelph in collaboration with Air Quality Solutions.
