 The Naturaire® System represents a hybridization of two technologies that are quickly gaining in usage as means of remediating contaminated soils, water and air in outdoor, industrial setting. These technologies are biofiltration, the use of biological systems of beneficial microbes to break organic pollutants down their benign constituents and phyto-remediation, the use of green plants to facilitate the remediation or reclamation of contaminated soils or water. The Naturaire® approach 'repackages' these old approaches into a system specifically designed for the rigours of the indoor environment. The air is cleaned through completely natural means using processes without any artificial chemicals. Many alternative means of cleaning the indoor environment rely on passing the air through filters with a range of chemicals that work like sponges to capture the contaminant out of the air as it passes through the material. However, like a sponge these filters become saturated and once saturated they can not remove any more and therefore have a limited life expectancy. Also at the end of the life of these filters, the filters must be disposed and because they work by pulling the pollutants out of the air and storing it, all of the pollutants ever removed from the air are still in the filter medium at the end of its life. The filter medium becomes hazardous waste, dangerous to humans and the environment. Naturaire® cleanses the air through biological means and does not rely on chemicals to remove the contaminants from the air. Naturaire® System is an ecological approach to maintain the indoor environment with the whole life cycle of the system taken into account. Because the pollutants in the air are broken down to their benign constituents, there is nothing to accumulate in the system. Although the systems are typically designed up to over 20 years of operation, the biological aspects have the ability to continue with their functions forever.
